Dominic Magee: Hello, my name is Dominic Maurice-Magee and today we will be talking to Dwight. Dwight has travelled throughout Cuba many times and has a passion for the country and its people.

Dominic Magee: What did you like about Havana?

Dwight Magee: Ahhh Havana, Havana is a great country, what a great city I should say. It’s the oldest city in central America, in the Caribbean. The people are amazing there. There is so much vibrance to the city, and the people are generally honest there really great people to talk too and spend time with.

Dominic Magee: Is Cuba relatively safe?

Dwight Magee: Oh yes, Cuba is very safe. Crime is relatively low in Cuba. There, in fact you’ll see woman throughout the island hitchhiking all over the island because crime is none existent there. Sure, you’ll problems like petty crime, but that you’ll have anywhere in the world. But crime? No. That’s not an issue in Cuba there. The government and police keep that very much under control because, the tourism industry is so important to the island.

Dominic Magee: How is the nightlife?

Dwight Magee: Well, the nightlife is amazing because in the Caribbean you have such a rich vibrance of culture, the things you have, you have the dancing that goes on there. The cultural music of Cuba is amazing as well, umm quite colorful, and umm quite lively.

Dominc Magee: How is the transportation?

Dwight Magee: Ahh transportation could be better, there’s not really any train service to get you around Cuba. So it’s primarily bus, or if your lucky enough to rent an old car which is actually a cheap method of transportation. And when your drive around in an old car, you’re driving in a car that’s sixty-seventy years old. Where most of us have never experienced this in our life’s anyway. So, its quite a rich drive around the island in a car that was made in the 1950s or early 1960s. If you look under the hood of these things, there actually held together with brail, wire and duct tape. Quite amazing to see how they made these cars last so long because parts are really scarce in Cuba.

Dominic Magee: Is there any advice you could give to a new traveller, inspired to travel too Cuba?

Dwight Magee: Go to Cuba, enjoy Cuba, and go there with your eyes open. Have no perceived notions on what to expect, and that’s the only way I can recommend travelling because if you have any preconceptions of what life should be like, you will be disappointed. Go there with an open eye and mind, the people are amazing, very, very friendly. Some of the people that meant in Cuba, we are still keep in contact today. So, great place truly enjoyed, and the rum fantastic!
